Spectra SHIELD® - Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can the 4 gram medallion be used on a dog less than 14 lbs?

A. No. The 4g medallion is not recommended for dogs under 14lbs. During development it was determined that the size of the 4g medallion was too large for dogs of this size, therefore no testing was performed and safety on dogs under 14lbs is unknown.

Q. Can the 8 gram medallion be used on a dog more than 56 lbs?

A. Yes. Due to the physics of the medallion, the 8 gram tag will work fine on very large dogs 150-200 lbs or more.

Q. Do dogs tolerate the medallion hanging from their collar?

A. The product is actual size as pictured on the package and yes the product is not suitable for all dogs, young dogs in particular are prone to fiddle with the tag and try to get it into their mouth.  Young dogs or "chewers" may try to get it in their mouth. This is not dangerous as the release rate of the medallion is very low and the amount of residue on the surface of the tag at any one time is very small.  As the active ingredients come to the surface of the tag they transfer almost immediately to the hair coat of the dog.  Most dogs after a short time become accustomed to it and then ignore it completely.

Q. I have a dog and cat in my home and they often play together. Will the medallion cause any harm to my cat?

A. No. The medallion only works on the dog because the dog wears the medallion 24 hours a day/7 days a week. There is little to no residue to be picked up from incidental contact by humans or non target animals such as cats living in the home with a treated dog.

Q. What happens if my dog chews and swallows the medallion?

A. There is no toxicity issue because the medallion is passed before any significant amount of insecticide can be released from the tag. However we recommend that confirmation is made that the medallion has passed in the dog’s stool.

Q. Can my dog play in our nearby lake or ocean while wearing the medallion?

A. Yes. The medallion should not be placed permanently in aquatic environments either through accidental spills or disposal. However, there is no harm if the dog plays in the water as the amount of active released from the tag is insignificant as no components of the medallion are water soluble.

Q. What if the dog gets wet? Does it become less effective?

A. If the dog gets wet there could be a temporary reduction in protection until the dog is dry again and any insecticide lost from the hair coat by the dog getting wet will be replenished by the tag very quickly. However no components of the medallion are water soluble.

Q. Can I use with oral flea products?

A. Yes. There are no contraindications for doing so. In fact, many oral flea products have no efficacy against ticks, therefore the tick protection provided by SpectraSHIELD is highly recommended and the additional flea control provides an extra "shield of protection.

Q. Is there any oil or liquid that comes out of the medallion?

A. Zetacypermethrin and Piperonyl Butoxide are both liquids in there technical state but they come out of tag so slowly that there is never any oil or liquid residue on the hair of the animal.

Q. Is this effective if it is rotated between dogs? (48 hours for one, 48 for the other and so on; assuming that the dogs are of equal weight ranges.)

A. The release rate of the medallion is very slow and for it to work properly it needs to be on one dog continuously.

Q. What if the medallion comes into contact with cats? Some other flea and tick spot-ons state their product is toxic to cats. Is there a similar concern with this product?

A. No. There should be no problem with the cat coming in contact with a dog that has been treated with Spectra SHIELD.  We have conducted studies to determine how much active ingredient can be picked up by a person petting or handling a treated dog.  The residue that can be picked up from the animal is very minor, measured only in parts per million.  This product  is much safer the topical flea and tick treatments that have much higher dosages.

Q. Does Spectra SHIELD work like a spot-on?

A. Yes. The insecticide that is released onto the dog migrates through the oils on the skin and hair coat, but without the mess and hassle of monthly applications.

Q. Does the medallion have any odor or chemical smell?

A. No. Spectra SHIELD is odor free.

Q. Is Spectra SHIELD good to use on indoor dogs?

A. Yes. Spectra SHIELD has no odor and it's mess free, it is ideal for indoor dogs.

Q. Is it easy to put Spectra SHIELD on my dog's collar?

A. Yes. It literally takes seconds to clip the patent-pending cross-clip to your dog's collar.

Q. Is Spectra SHIELD a fast-acting product?

A. Allow 48 hours for insecticide to begin releasing and migrating across the dog through the oils on the skin or coat.

Q. I don't like putting large amounts of active ingredients on my dog. Does Spectra SHIELD help me avoid this?

A. Yes. The release rate of the medallion is very low and active ingredient residual on the surface of the medallion at any one time is very small. This is the reason the medallion must be on the dog 48 hours to begin reaching full effectiveness.
